How to Make Crown Molding Shelf

What you will need: miter saw,
crown molding, tape measure, drill, wood glue, screws drill driver, wood for shelf, paint, sander, pencil, hooks, brackets
  1. Take Measurements
    Determine the exact and precise measurement of the crown molding you want to do. How long and how wide? Make sure that the size of the molding shelf will suit to where you want to attach it. Take the measurement of the base for your shelf. Use tape measure and start drawing the line on the wall by using pencil and emphasize the endpoints.
  2. Cut the Wood
    Use a miter saw to cut the molding wood to your desired size. Place the molding upside down on the cutting board to get accurate cuts. If you don’t have a miter saw, you can use other saw in the same manner and cut the corners in a 45 degree angle. Cut the wood that you will attach to the crown molding of the shelf. Create 3 pieces of moldings. Make sure that they will fit together.

  3. Combine the Moldings
    Start drilling pilot holes to the molding where you will insert the screws that will attach the moldings together. After that, use a wood glue to secure wood attachments. Let it dry for a while.

  4. Smooth the Edges
    Use a sander or a sand paper to smoothen the wood and its edges. Smooth and clean surface gives an impression of good quality work. It will also help for painting. 
     
  5. Assemble the Shelf
    Drill pilot holes on the wall where you will attach the shelf. Use a wood glue to keep the shelf in place and let it dry. After drying, screw the base board to the crown molding. Once the moldings are dry, you can start painting it with the color that will blend to the wall.

  6. Install the Crown Molding Shelf
    Finally, your molding is now ready to be attached on the wall. The crown molding shelf is better when it sits close to the wall. You can hang it or directly attached it to your wall. For hanging, you can use brackets and hooks, be sure that the brackets can carry the weight of the molding and the materials you will put there.
